Management Information Systems, M.I.S. for short, provides professional consultancy for the management of (embedded) software and hardware development projects. The main areas of expertise are:
· (Software) Process Improvement and the Capability Maturity Model. We have done assessments and quick scans of software development departments in several European, American and Asian countries. In all those cases we have proposed a number of recommendations to improve the way software was being developed. We have made several presentations to gain Awareness for Process Improvement from senior management, middle management, and engineers. Since 1998 we have started to apply the same improvement approach, using the Capability Maturity Model, to hardware development departments (both IC development and printed circuit board development). We have also developed an Interim Maturity Evaluation toolkit based on the Capability Maturity Model for Software. We have been involved in the set-up, implementation of several process improvement programs, including helping in the definition of development processes and their deployment. · Process Improvement and the Capability Maturity Model Integrated. Building on the experience gained with the application of the Capability Maturity Model we have developed an Interim Maturity Evaluation toolkit based on the Capability Maturity Model Integrated. We have also prepared several Capability Maturity Model Integrated presentations
· Project management: We have developed a standard way of working during the planning phase of projects, and have defined the contents of a project management plan that is now widely used by our customers. We also recommend different ways to monitor and control projects during their execution. We also have a three day project management workshop where these principles are taught.
· Software risk management: We have consulted with several customers on how to include risk management in their software development projects. We can also present a software risk management workshop.
· Software estimation: Since some time we are also gaining expertise in different techniques and models for the estimation of the size and performance of the software, and the cost and lead time of the software development project. A two day workshop on this topic is available. A toolkit supporting Size Estimation Using Paired Comparisons is available for free (see Free Tools page)
· Quality assurance: We have consulted with customers who wanted to implement quality assurance. A special quality assurance workshop has been developed to this end.
· Review techniques: We can train people in use of formal (inspections) or informal (walkthroughs) review techniques. We can help development departments to include reviews as a main verification and validation technique during development.
· Configuration management: We can advise on the set-up of configuration management and train people to do it.
· Process Measurement and Analysis: We can advise and train people in setting up measurement programs to define and use metrics and performance indicators as required by the Capability Maturity Model.
· Test Process Improvement: We can advise people in improving the test processes being used. Our approach is based on the TPI model from IQUIP, The Netherlands
· Human Resources Management Improvement: We can advise people in improving the Human Resources Management processes being used. Our approach is based on the People Capability Maturity Model from the Software Engineering Institute (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh) |
